A Hungarian/Italian born in Romania, Gabor Tarko studied film at the University of Dramatic Arts, Cinematography and TV in Bucharest. After graduation he began working in features, first as a camera operator on Calamity and then as DP on Death Arrives on Tape, The Pale Light of Sorrow, Winter Stars and The Cruise. Although an established European cinematographer upon his arrival in Toronto in 1981, Gabor began anew to establish his credentials in the US and Canada.
Tarko entered TV advertising and quickly climbed the industry ladder. By the late 1980’s his extensive credits made him one of Toronto’s leading shooters. “Now that Tarko has parlayed his talent into a Director’s real, his work as both director and DOP is sought both in Canada and the United States” as reported in SHOOT.
His renown as a director/cinematographer can be summarized as follows: “He has an outstanding reputation... and he is an excellent shooter” (Playback). Tarko maintains homes in both NYC and Toronto. This allows him to work anywhere in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Europe… and to win many international awards.
